The Caves @ Lilico's
Last night, Jon and I went to see the Caves at Lilico's as part of the Barnstaple Fringe. The Barnstaple Fringe is part of the North Devon Festival. Several venues around Barnstaple organise weekly gigs during the month of June, and most of these are free (including at Lilico's).
Peter Bruntnell is the man behind the gigs at Lilico's, and he's a very talented musician, too. He also seems to know some excellent musicians, so these gigs are well worth catching!
Last night was the best so far (of all the Fringe gigs I've been to!). Last year Dai Godwin, the lead singer from the Caves, performed and Jon and I loved that gig, so we were determined to make it to see the whole band. We had a delicious meal at Jalapeno Peppers beforehand, and managed to arrive early for a change. Lilico's seemed emptier than previous gigs at the start of the evening, which meant that Jon and I could find seats this time.
The support was Douglas E Powell, who was enjoyable, and played both guitar and harmonica. Then came Peter Bruntnell himself, accompanied by Dave Little, and this was a real treat! I loved every song, and Dave managed to add to them to make each one sound kinda different, in a cool way.
And then the Caves performed. Wow! They were amazing! The music was full of energy and they sounded really tight. I was surprised to find out they had no CDs to sell, as they sounded as if they'd been playing together for decades. Every song they played could easily be a hit. It really was a fantastic gig. If you have access, check out my Photo Gallery to see what they look like (Llama photos are now available, too!).
I hope they come back to Barnstaple again soon!
