Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding
Book Title: Bridget Jones's Diary
Author Name: Helen Fielding
Why I decided to read this book: I first saw the film with some friends and decided, on their recommendations, to buy the book. I recently reread it because I was bored.
Summary: Bridget, a 30-something singleton, keeps a diary about work, friends, family and looking for love. And makes a fool of herself quite a lot, but in an endearing way.
Strengths: The characterisation is brilliant and the diary form really lends itself well to the plot. Helen Fielding 'borrowed' from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice for parts of this story (including the love interest's name!), and manages to weave these bits into her setting of 1990's London to create a clever tale of one woman's search for love, a career, and her ideal weight.
Weaknesses: Parts of the story are a little over the top and somewhat cringeworthy. I think I prefer the way the film version altered her mother's dalliance, for example, which allows Bridget's own mistakes and triumphs to remain firmly in the spotlight throughout.
Overall Opinion: It's a pleasant, lighthearted read that certainly cheers me up when I'm feeling bored or sad. :)
