Eurovision 2007

It's that time of year again! So here's my Eurovision commentary! :D

Wogan is the best! He was fab tonight, as always, and he's the main reason I watch this each year. He has been doing this for "a hundred and seventy-five years" so far, he said, which is impressive, methinks, for a 68 year old...;) How do I know Terry Wogan is 68? Because Terry Wogan was born on 3rd August, 1938. :P Actually, Wogan has been commentating on Eurovision since 1971. And long may he continue to do so! It would not be the same with him!

Terry Wogan's face surrounded by a heart because he is fab and we love him!

Anyway! Moving on quickly... Fireworks once again dominated. But black was the colour of Eurovision this year. And it seemed that many were trying to find a music genre never before heard at Eurovision, which was rather amusing.

Onto the songs...

Sadly (or maybe not), due to technical difficulties, we missed the first two songs, so apologies to Bosnia-Herzegovina and Spain. I can't comment on your entries.

The first we heard was Belarus... when this started I thought they were auditioning to perform the next Bond theme tune. Singer was rather rubbish.

Ireland produced something typically Irish although not very good. I love Irish music and I couldn't stand this. :(

Finland tried a rock band again, but this time something more like Evanescence. I prefered this to the first two Jon and I heard. It was very Goth, which was this year's theme, it seems.

FYR Macedonia - very short dress, very low cut top! There were two weird dancers in the background, but I doubt anyone was actually watching them. What happened to the back of her dress? I think that dress was an optical illusion.

Slovenia had a woman "in a leather bustier with operatic aspirations" (thanks, Wogan!). Another Goth, but um... well. Only at Eurovision.

Hungary went for a blues band. At Eurovision??? It was very shouty, shouty and I think she lost her voice in the middle of the song. ;)

Lithuania had bongos, guitars and shadow puppets! Well, okay, what I mean is that the backing band were silhouetted, and could have been muppets.

Greece had a dance - the first we saw tonight! Whatever happened to all the tacky Eurovision dancing? Anyway, I would describe this entry as an Egyptian version of Ricky Martin's music...

Georgia were kind of trance/drum n bass, but very Eurovision-stylee. And there was sword-dancing! I actually liked this one, to be honest, compared to the others. :P

Sweden did glam rock, but with a song sounding a bit like Chas and Dave. There were psychedelic black and white swirls in the background.

France - '80s New Romantics style. They were all wearing pink and black and the drummer had wings. I thought the French never sung in English? I know it's only partly in English, but still! However, I'd have to say... very French.

Latvia had the six tenors. It's a classical, Italian version of "If You Don't Know Me By Now" with the Eye of Mordor in the background.

Russia had very disappointing costumes. Black, with white collars, high necks and you could barely see any flesh. Nice voices, but shame about the song. The Matrix was in the background.

Germany's song was a swing number. Some way through he changed from singing German to English! It was strange.

Serbia's song was completely stolen. I cannot think of the name of the original song, but I was singing it over the top. And why the Irish interlude??? How did this possibly win?

Ukraine. What? The lead singer looked like Timmy Mallett wrapped in silver foil. Other than that, I do not know what to say...

The UK - I want to cry. I know we don't actually want to win, but could we just enter something decent for once? And those lyrics were tacky and tasteless!

Romania had a bowler hat. Um, what was this exactly? And how many languages? Why did the guy dressed like a Frenchman sing in Russian?

Bulgaria had drumming goths. It was very Too Unlimited.

Turkey... Wogan was right! It's a tanned, slimmer, younger brother of Chris Moyles! A bad song, though.

Armenia were, um, oh dear. Why was there tissue paper in a red tree in the background?

Moldova were last. They had a violin, combined very nicely with a rock song. I liked this! :) But, once again, Wogan was right - PULL YOUR TROUSERS UP!!! I found the flag-waver distracting, maybe that was so no one would notice her trousers falling down?

And now the voting... is it ever not political? Are we the only country who don't take it seriously and yet don't vote for our neighbours??? Ok, ok, I know we don't really have neighbours, except Ireland, who don't want to win any more, and France, who hate us. But still. If the other countries all take it so seriously, why do they vote so predictably?

Oh, and one more thing... Malta! Why did you give us douze points??? Ireland gave us pity points, but you? Why?

Ah, well, another year over. It was interesting. My faves (in no particular order) were Moldova, Bulgaria, Georgia and Finland. Who were yours?

And that's it for 2007. But Eurovision will be back in a year's time. I'm looking forward to Terry's commentary next May already!
