The Geek Question

In true geek style, Jon told me to blog, so I shall!

While I was crocheting my blanket (I've done 75% so far, it seems!), Jon was moaning about the difficulty of making decisions. He is thinking about getting a Mac laptop and was talking about asking the geek community for their input.

He said he was worried about the "cross-what's it called?" and I replied "gender?". Apparently, he meant platforms.

But what are 'platforms'? I think gender is a good way of defining platforms. For instance, a Mac is blatantly female, because geeks worship Macs, and they also secretly worship women (secretly, because most geeks are way too shy to actually approach someone of the opposite gender).

Thinking in that logic, a PC is thus male. And a PC with Microsoft software is a dominant male, obviously. This is why geeks are so anti-Microsoft!

And now I'm starting to wonder what a marriage between a Mac and a PC would be like...;)

Jon then asked what gender Linux would be, and suggested that it was asexual. I pointed out that UNIX sounds very similar to eunuch, so he might be right. He's apparently never seen that Dilbert strip...

So, moving on swiftly, what is it with geeks? Why is it, that, every time they have to make a decision, they first have to go online and ask all their friends what they think? No wonder they have such difficulty interacting with women!

Geek 1: Should I ask this incredibly hot woman out?
Geek 2: Yes
Geek 3: How hot is she?
Geek 1: Incredibly.
Geek 3: Yes!
Geek 1: How should I ask her out?
Geek 2: Good question. How about...

The discussion degenerates into an argument over whose idea is best and ends with all the geeks voting for their favourite from a vast list of possibilities! By the end of the vote, the incredibly hot woman has probably started dating someone else...

Actually, this sounds a LOT like Jon's early courtship...;) So, is it accurate for most geeks, or is my point of view skewed by Jon's own insecurities?
