Lundy Island Research Links
I have already given a few links to more information on Lundy Island and its history, but I refrained from giving links on particular individuals from Lundy’s history as I felt it best to give these links all at once, rather than clogging up the posts. If you’re interested in Lundy’s history of piracy and smuggling, then here are a few links worth trying…
For all but Benson, this Pirate Island webpage was very useful.
For all but Dolphin, this Lundy History webpage was also helpful.
The following sites were informative in researching William de Marisco and his family:
Also of interest was an extract from "The Marisco Family of Lundy & Ireland" quoted at the bottom of this webpage detailing the family tree of the Norman de Marisco families.
The following sites were perused in researching Colyn Dolphin:
The following sites were of use in researching The Barbary Pirates:
For those interested in finding a book about the Barbary pirates and the white slave trade, the story of a young boy called Thomas Pellow who was kidnapped by these corsairs and sold as a slave in Morocco is told in the book "White Gold" by Giles Milton.
The following sites were handy in researching Thomas Benson
- Lundy, the Mariscos & Benson
- Lundy Island from A Handbook for Travellers in Devonshire
- Smuggling on the North Coast of Cornwall & Devon
Also useful was Google’s cache of www.devonheritage.com, which appears to sadly no longer exist. The two particularly useful pages contained extracts from print; these were a Paper in vol.73 of the Transactions of the Devonshire Association, 1941, "Members of Parliament for Barnstaple" and a book on Lundy Island by Anne Lauder (title not mentioned, but the only such book available on www.amazon.co.uk is called "Lundy: Puffin Island").
Hope that's a good start for those keen to know more about Lundy Island! I plan to research further and hopefully find a few good books - when I know more, I'll update my posts. If you know/find out anything that would help me, get in touch!
Bye4now...
