Top 100 Cartoons?
While at Jon's Dad's house, we've been watching the odd TV programme (mostly FRIENDS repeats, as there's nothing much else on, to be honest). His Dad has Freeview, so we have been enjoying the delights of E4. On Saturday night we were tired after a long drive down, so we crashed out on the sofa and found E4 had a show on the Top 100 cartoons. We don't know how this was all decided, but it was an interesting list. I wrote it all down with comments, so now you can all know my views on these cartoons. I love cartoons. One of my aims for before I'm thirty (these aims aren't written down anywhere and will most likely be long forgotten by the time I'm 25) is to own as many of my fave cartoons and children's shows as possible.
First of all, why must all Top 100/Best Of shows have a naff, unfunny, and at times tasteless presenter? Or is it just the script? If they hadn't had Jimmy Carr being annoying before and after the ad breaks, it could have been a much shorter and more enjoyable program. Oh well.
Now for the Top 100 in reverse order:
100: Wacky Races - what??? Only #100??? This show ROCKED! I absolutely LOVE Wacky Races!
99: The Pink Panther - oh, the happy memories. :) I was once a big fan of this. However, instead of dwelling on his infinite coolness, the people on the show were discussing whether the Pink Panther was gay. I'll answer that for you: No.
98: Wait Til Your Father Gets Home - I never knew this one. Cannot comment.
97: Huckleberry Hound - I like him. Sadly, the idiot talking about him on the show didn't. :(
96: Betty Boop - she rocks! She was originally for an adult audience and was quite risque. She had to be toned down for kids. :)
95: Charley Says - I had completely forgotten this one!! Kenny Everitt did the vocals of Charley.
94: Queer Duck - what? Not seen this, and, from the clips on the show, not sure I want to...
93: Mr Magoo - They all were rather mean about him. If he's been voted into the Top 100, surely they could find someone to say something nice?
92: Animal Farm - the first British animated film, apparently. Definitely not for kids, although people didn't realise this at the time, we were told. Ho hum...
91: Mighty Mouse - he was ok, but not great. A bit too much, as they said, of the "quintessential American" and could be really annoying. This is higher than Betty Boop, the Pink Panther and Wacky Races? *sigh*
90: Captain Caveman & The Teen Angels - apparently a cross between Scooby Doo and Charlie's Angels, involving one of the cavemen from Wacky Races and three pretty ladies. I wish I'd seen this when younger. Sounds highly amusing.
89: Felix the Cat - not really impressed by this. He's rather cute, but could never be as good as...
88: Woody Woodpecker: I LOVED this!!! He apparently won 2 oscars - go Woody!!!
87: Jamie & The Magic Torch - :D I have two episodes of this on DVD. I need more. The characters are sooo bizarre, and very cool. Plus, what fab accents!
86: Watership Down - this is the scariest film I have ever seen. I kid you not. I have never been as scared of any film as I was of the following three films when I was a child: Labyrinth, Watership Down, and Rats from NIMH or whatever it's called - don't let young children watch them! There is also the issue of language - the seagull swears in this! What were my parents thinking when they let me see this?
85: Droopy Dog - tee-hee! I was mad about Droopy as a child.
84: Roobarb - wasn't it "and Custard" or was that a later addition? I was never really a big fan of this, so I don't fully remember.
83: Dumbo - awwwww! *sniff* So sad, the bit with his mummy... This is apparently the only Disney movie where the main character never speaks.
82: How The Grinch Stole Christmas - never seen this (have seen the film with Jim Carey, though). In fact, I only heard of the Grinch in my late teens. It was in a Christmas crossword puzzle on a CD-ROM, I think. I only actually found out what the Grinch was when the film came out, and I think I only saw that last year. Would not be on my list.
81: Babar - I felt this was too young for me when it was on TV, so I never really got into it. I think Jonnie might have, though.
80: Yogi Bear - "I smell a picnic basket, BooBoo!" - :D I loved Yogi! Well, BooBoo, mainly.
79: Peter Pan - I loved this film, but it makes me sad to know that it did not contain any of JM Barrie's original dialgue. :(
78: Noggin the Nog - don't remember this. It's by the same makers as Bagpuss and Ivor the Engine.
77: The Aventures of TinTin - I was not a fan of TinTin, but that didn't stop me joining in to persuade our Chemistry teacher to let us watch it one lesson in secondary school. He had set us work, and then went to the back of the class and turned on the TV. Duh - not a smart move. It was Batman & Robin. He let us watch it, but it was the end, so to make up for making us miss most of Batman & Robin, we persuaded him to let us watch TinTin, which was on next.
76: Belleville Rendez-vous - French (obviously). Don't know this one, and not too keen to know.
75: Lady & The Tramp - soooo romantic! :D:D:D
74: Willo The Wisp - this was so freaky and zany, it was ace!!! Kenneth Williams did all the voices, apparently.
73: Pepe Le Pew - tee-hee! :D
72: The Legend of the OverFiend - um, what??? Extremely pervy Japanese animation. Never want to see this. EVER.
71: Alice in Wonderland - oh, I love this! As they said, it has "wondrous animation" and is just fab!
70: Monty Python - I wasn't sure this should be counted as a cartoon. I s'pose it's animated, so... and it is funny, so we'll accept it in here.
69: The Wind in the Willows - Toad is actually Count Duckula! *giggles* This is great.
68: Hong Kong Phooey - "anyone who had a dressing gown could be Hong Kong Phooey" - :D
67: The Snowman - beautiful, this. "Essential Christmas viewing" - too right!
66: Captain Pugwash - I didn't watch this as a child, but I can confirm that the pirates' names were Tom the Cabin Boy and Master Mate, and NOT what you might have heard... If Louis reads this, you might be disappointed by some of the comments made on this...
65: A Bug's Life - bah. Too modern, and has never interested me.
64: Top Cat - he was one cool cat. Yeah! He was also based on Sgt Bilko.
63: Bambi - "who can resist a film about a little baby deer?" - I can't. :) Apparently, some of the scenes of woodland creatures were unused scenes from Pinocchio!
62: Battle of the Planets - this ROCKED!!! The Japanese done good with this. :D
61: Foghorn Leghorn - funny, but rather overrated, I think, although some bloke on the show thought he was underrated. They also mentioned (just after I said the same thing to Jon) how Fred from Corrie has copied him!
60: Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs - made huge amounts of money at its release. I love this, especially Dopey! :D
59: Chicken Run - I liked this. Apparently the bodies of the chickens were made of silicon. Plasticine does not stick to silicon, hence their necklaces. (Sad to say they're probably no more after that horrific fire!)
58: The Powerpuff Girls - this is a kinda cute cartoon, I'd say.
57: The Jungle Book - Great. :D
56: Fritz the Cat - ??? not impressed by what was shown of this one.
55: Winnie The Pooh - AA Milne is the best!!!
54: Thundercats - I used to LOVE this!
53: Fantasia - this is incredible. The beauty of what they achieved with this has never been surpassed, in my opinion. Not even Fantasia 2000 comes close. I know this, I own it on DVD. I need to get the original...
52: 2DTV - oh dear. looks awful, although Jon says he's watched it a bit, and it is/was usually better than the clips shown on this.
51: The Little Mermaid - I like this, even though it missed the point of the original story.
50: Donald Duck - yay!
49: Scooby Doo - I love this, and, I'll admit it, I loved Scrappy, too. Am I the only one?
48: Road Runner - "meep! meep!" One of my fave Warner Bros characters.
47: Bod - "everyone remembers Bod" - I don't.
46: Inspector Gadget - I so wanted to be Penny! Maybe that's why I did an electronics degree? The cartoon was based on a show that Jon remembers called Get Smart.
45: Pokemon - *yawn*
44: Spider-Man - does anyone remember Ice Man and FireStar?
43: Ivor The Engine - another I never watched. Same people as made Bagpuss. I own all of Bagpuss on DVD (that's right, all 13 episodes).
42: Samurai Jack - what? The animation looks the same as the Powerpuff Girls, but apart from that, didn't look great to me.
41: King of the Hill - am I the only person to be unimpressed by this?
40: Rugrats - meloves!
39: A Charlie Brown Christmas - I like all the characters in this, they're so great. :)
38: 101 Dalmations - I was absolutely mad about dalmations after seeing this.
37: Transformers - what can I say? I loved the yellow Beetle. :D
36: The Magic Rounabout - tee-hee! Emma Thompson's dad did the English version.
35: The Sylvester & Tweety Show - I loved Tweety Pie!
34: He-Man - "I have the power!" I loved He-Man AND She-Ra. Both cartoons rocked.
33: Beauty & The Beast - this was good. It was rather sweet.
32: Beavis & Butthead - huh-huh-huh-huh, cool.
31: Mickey Mouse - he has a star on Hollywood Boulevard. I like Mickey, but where's Goofy on the list, eh?
30: Daffy Duck - Warner Bros characters have well and truly beaten the Disney ones in this, haven't they!
29: Dungeons & Dragons - I loved this! It also succeeded in confusing me at times... it took me years to realise what "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" really meant, lol!
28: Spongebob Squarepants - am I the only person to think this overrated?
27: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - "heroes in a halfshell!" My fave was Donatello - who was yours?
26: Futurama - I liked this, but does it really deserve such a high place on the list?
25: Pinocchio - :) You can say what you like about Disney - they've made some amazing films. :D
24: Danger Mouse - "he's the greatest!" Nuff said.
23: Popeye: I heard somewhere once that Popeye was created to persuade kids to eat spinach, which at the time was considered extremely good for you. The campaign worked (it became the third most popular kids' food, after icecream and chocolate), but they later found out spinach wasn't as great as they had originally believed. Oh well, never mind...
22: Monsters, Inc - "Kitty!" The little girl was the daughter of one of the crew (one of the artists, I think they said), and they basically followed her around with a microphone. How sweet!
21: Princess Mononoke - looks like any other anime cartoon to me. *sigh*
20: Looney Tunes - how can they put the whole Looney Tunes in here, as well as individual characters??? Seems a bit silly. Looney Tunes does rock, though...
19: Who Framed Roger Rabbit? - this is a such a brill film!
18: Ren & Stimpy - Oh no. :(
17: Aladdin - I love the genie!
16: Akira - never heard of this.
15: Aardman Animations - *sob* So many priceless artefacts gone!
14: Finding Nemo - never been enticed to watch this. I don't think it's been around long enough to earn a place in the Top 15. But I'm a stickler for the classics. ;)
13: The Nightmare Before Christmas - Wow! YAY!
12: The Iron Giant - ???
11: The Flintstones - Yabba Dabba Doo! Pebbles and BamBam rocked! *shock, horror!* Wilma Flintstone once swore on the show! :O
10: Bugs Bunny - who is your favourite Warner Bros character? Mine's probably Tweety.
9: The Incredibles - ok, I love this (Jon's obsessed), but a new film this high? Not sure I'd put it in the Top Ten...
8: Spirited Away - this is good, but, again, Top Ten? There are too many recent things in here...
7: The Lion King - no, no, no. It's good, but not this good. I LOVE Hakuna Matata, but this is definitely NOT my fave Disney film.
6: Shrek/Shrek 2 - ok, these rock. I'll allow these in here.
5: Family Guy - um, why? I really have not gotten into this show yet. Can anyone explain what's so good?
4: Toy Story/TS2 - definitely high on my list, although not sure it'd be this high.
3: South Park - oh dear. Oh dear.
2: Tom & Jerry - superb! :D
1: The Simpsons - really? Number 1? The best? Ok, ok, I'm not at all surprised by this. The Simpsons is an excellent show. I personally don't think it's the best, but it's definitely the most popular, so deserves its place.
What is my fave cartoon ever? I'm not sure, there are so many to choose from, and I don't have the time to make my own Top 100 list at the mo'. What is your absolutely fave cartoon?
I think the list above is far from perfect. Some cartoons sadly missing from this list are The Smurfs, The Moomins, The Land Before Time, The Fox & The Hound, Catch The Pigeon, Count Duckula and Trap Door. Can you think of any others?
Have your say on this subject in the forum!
