Characters & Twists

I'll upload the latest writing later today, maybe after I've done some more...:)

I just wrote the twist I promised, so it will be interesting to see your reactions when I put it online! Hopefully you'll like it, and not find it wetter than a damp squid that's been thrown back into the ocean. I enjoyed writing it, anyway.

And I've also written the end, oddly enough. When I woke up, ideas for later in the novel were swirling round my brain, and I saw a twist at the end clearly, so I wrote the last three paragraphs of the novel. Which is odd, 'cos I've got to get through the rest of the story now!

Anyway, now for a word on characters:

I don't like my main character. If she was a real person, I don't think I would like her. She makes an interesting character to write about, but as a person, I'm not keen. Which I find odd.

I think someone once said that all characters in a book are actually different sides of the author's personality... or was that characters in dreams? Or both?

Anyway! I don't know how true that is, but I have always felt that I put a big part of myself into my main characters, or at least base them in part on me somehow. This is not a conscious thing, but something that I have noticed about my own writing.

Yet Tanya is completely different to me. In her situation I would not do what she's done, and I would not do what she is about to do. If someone told me about someone like Tanya, I would think she was incredibly stupid. But that's part of the fun of writing her story - she's different, fresh, and gives me great scope to write as she keeps making things worse for herself unintentionally.

I do, however, feel very sorry for her after what just happened. It's mostly her own fault, but, still, it was quite sad to write, and she must be feeling wretched right now.

What do people think on this? Do you like Tanya? And do you think my dislike of Tanya shows through the writing ('cos I'm worried that this might be the case)? Get in touch and let me know!
